Methods

Twelve-year randomized clinical study of epithalamine (a pineal-gland peptide preparation; also spelled Epithalamin / Epithalamine) in elderly patients with coronary disease and accelerated aging of the cardiovascular system. Both arms received the same basic therapy; the treated arm also received long-term epithalamine. The English abstract does not give sample size, dose, or allocation details; those belong in the primary text. This page does not reprint the publisher PDF.

Findings

The authors report that long-term epithalamine decreased functional age and the degree of cardiovascular aging and increased exercise tolerance. After 12 years, deaths in the epithalamine group were 28% lower than in the control group despite the same basic therapy. They report cardiovascular mortality about two-fold lower, and the incidence of cardiovascular failure and respiratory disease about two-fold lower, in the treated group. They interpret this as a geroprotective effect on long-term prognosis in elderly subjects with accelerated aging.
