Methods

Synthetic peptides the authors call cytogens — Cortagen, Epithalon (Epitalon / AEDG), Livagen, and Vilon — were applied to organotypic cultures of explants from rat brain cortex, subcortical structures, liver, and thymus. The comparison is to cytomedins (peptide complexes) from the same tissues that had been used as the chemical starting point for those synthetics. Explant size, peptide concentration, and culture duration belong in the primary text.

Findings

The authors report that each synthetic peptide stimulated growth of explants from the matching tissue: Cortagen for cortex, Epithalon for subcortical structures, Livagen for liver, and Vilon for thymus. They present that pattern as tissue-specific activity inherited from the parent cytomedin complexes.
