Methods
The authors studied tetrapeptide Epitalon (Ala-Glu-Asp-Gly) in congenital pigmented degeneration of the retina. One arm is Campbell rats; the other is patients with degenerative retinal lesions. Findings
In Campbell rats, Epitalon is reported to intensify bioelectric and functional activity of the retina by preserving morphological structure. In patients with degenerative retinal lesions, the authors report a positive clinical effect in 90% of cases. They suggest the tetrapeptide participates in transcription mechanisms common to the epiphysis and the retina.
The 90% figure is the authors’ clinical impression in this 2002 communication. Independent replication and later controlled evidence are separate questions. It is not a current treatment guideline. Follow the PMID.
