Methods

One hundred four patients received bioregulatory therapy (retinal preparation Retinalamin, pineal preparation Epithalamin, cerebral-cortex preparation Cortexin) and 42 patients were controls. The English abstract does not describe randomization, masking, dose, or duration. Those details belong in the primary text.

Findings

The authors report that peptide bioregulators in 90% of cases promoted improvement of visual acuity, improved the ophthalmoscopic picture of the fundus (resolution of hemorrhages and plasmorrhages, decreased macular edema), and in all cases improved functional activity of the retina and retinal blood flow. They report no negative clinical changes after the peptides, and they describe normalized carbohydrate metabolism (blood sugar and glycosylated hemoglobin), phagocytosis, and subjective well-being. They interpret this as a pathogenetic effect.
